Steingraeber Encore 138 K-SFM by Antoine Wagner
The Encore brings together Steingraeber’s traditional piano-making and Antoine Wagner’s artistic exploration of forests, memory and sound. It is one of five unique instruments created for The Landscapes of Sound: An Impossible Forest. Across the collection, natural materials and imagined landscapes transform each piano into both a musical instrument and a visual artwork. The Encore features European oak front panels hand-painted by Wagner using Sumi ink. This traditional black ink creates a fluid, expressive forest image while allowing the texture and grain of the oak to remain visible beneath it. A satin finish gives the instrument a soft, natural appearance. The piano itself is Steingraeber’s 138 K-SFM concert upright. Its exceptional scale and long strings produce a powerful, resonant bass and a sound comparable to a 180 cm salon grand. Its Steingraeber-Ferro-Magnet action uses magnets in place of conventional jack springs, allowing faster repetition and a responsive, grand-piano-like playing experience. Custom orders can also be commissioned in the same artistic style or adapted to suit a client’s individual requirements.
Dimensions ● Height: 138cm ● Width: 152cm ● Depth: 66cm About Antoine Wagner and the collaboration Antoine Wagner is a visual artist and the great-great-grandson of composer Richard Wagner. His work explores the relationships between landscape, memory, mythology and sound through photography, drawing, film, installation and performance. The Steingraeber collaboration developed through time spent at the company’s Bayreuth workshops. Studies created by Wagner in New York were further developed in Bayreuth before being transferred onto the surfaces of the instruments. Together, the five pianos form an imagined ecosystem in which music, craftsmanship and the natural world meet. A bit about Steingraeber & Söhne Pianos In the UK, Steingraeber pianos can still be arguably defined as the best kept secret in the piano world. Since 1852, these wonderful instruments have been made to very limited numbers in Bayreuth, Germany and their list of proud owners include Franz Liszt whose last piano can be found in the grand yet welcoming residence of the Steingraeber family. Udo Schimdt-Steingraeber and his talented team of artisans produce exquisite instruments which, for those in the know, are considered to be amongst the finest pianos made today. We have sold several of their instruments to famous musicians who up until their visit to our showroom, were not aware of their existence. They are also responsible for many innovations including the optional SFM ‘grand feel’ action on their uprights and the unique pedalling system for wheelchair bound players.
